Sri Lanka is a country with more than 7000 years back of history. Through ups and downs, invasions and liberations, now it has become a third-world country in Asia. According to history, our ancestors kept a close relationship with the universe in astronomy as well as astrology. Unfortunately, by the end of 2023, astronomy was popular only among students who had an interest in participating in the Astronomy Olympiad competition. Other than that, astronomy is a subject unit for undergraduates who study physics at a few local universities. A limited number of students do PhD in the field of astronomy collaboratively with foreign universities. By changing the history of astronomy in Sri Lanka, the Ceylon Institute of Space Science (Private) Limited (CISS) was established as a Private and Public Partnership project in collaboration with the Distance Learning Centre Limited (DLC) which comes under the Ministry of Public Administration. CISS was registered as an educational institution on 07-12-2023 with Company Number PV 00290029.

Our main objective is to create new industries and job opportunities based on astronomy by promoting astronomy qualitatively in Sri Lanka. Along with this, our institution is working as an educational institution that can systematically study astronomy in Sri Lanka from the school level to the degree level.
